Loons get the jump on the Rattlers

MIDLAND, MI -- The Great Lakes Loons scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on two more in the second on the way to a 6-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night at Dow Diamond. Jaime Ortiz his a two-out, two-run homer in the first to help the Loons take the lead. Steve Johnson worked five scoreless innings for his third win of the season.

Timber Rattler starting pitcher Edward Paredes probably should have been out of the top of the first without any damage. Lead-off batter Erik Kanaby reached on an error. He was erased on a force play, but the Rattlers couldn't turn two. Paredes got the next out, but Jovanny Rosario was still at first base. Travis Vitters doubled on a 2-2 pitch after fouling off four two strike pitches from Paredes and Rosario scored. Then, Ortiz launched his sixth home run of the season over the right-centerfield fence.

The Loons (14-16) continued their offensive output in the bottom of the second. Kanaby singled to drive in Preston Mattingly, who had walked to start the inning. Rosario followed with a double and Kanaby scored for the 5-0 advantage.

Paredes lasted just 2-2/3 innings, he gave up five runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Johnson kept the Rattlers (10-17) off the board in his five innings of work. He allowed two hits and struck out six while walking a pair for his third win of the season.

Wisconsin would get to his replacement. Thomas Melgarejo gave up a lead off single to Edilio Colina in the sixth. The single extended Colina's hitting streak to 15 games. He would move to second on a wild pitch and take third on a grounder. A sacrifice fly by Juan Diaz drove in Colina with the Rattlers first run.

Great Lakes got their sixth run of the night in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pedro Baez doubled into the right field corner with two outs to score Vetters all the way from first for a 6-1 lead.

Victor Garate pitched two scoreless innings to finish off the Rattlers an give Great Lakes their second win in a row.

The final game of the three-game series is Tuesday morning. Nathan Adcock (0-2, 3.32) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Daigoro Rondon (2-2, 6.45) is set to start for the Loons. Game time at Dow Diamond is 9:35am CDT.
