
Magnet schools highlighted at May 9th Lugnuts game

LANSING - Fans attending the Friday, May 9 Lansing Lugnuts game at Oldsmobile Park will have the opportunity to learn about the only schools in Lansing that offer themed education tailored to meet student interests.
Each of the Lansing School District's 11 magnet schools and programs will have a booth just inside the gates when they open at 5:50 p.m. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The game against the West Michigan Whitecaps is also a LAFCU fireworks night.
In addition to the information booth, students from Everett Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Academy will perform the National Anthem and a magnet school student will throw out the first pitch. Also, a pre-game parade will highlight all of the schools and their theme-based learning programs.
The Lansing School District is the only school district in the area to offer magnet schools, which provide educational programs that are tailored to nurture the interests and talents of students. Programs are available to students starting at age 4 and extending all the way through 12th grade.
Themes available are:
* Visual and performing arts: Pleasant View (K-8) and Everett (9-12). * Math, science, and engineering: Woodcreek (K-5), Dwight Rich (6-8) and Sexton (9-12). * International Baccalaureate: Post Oak (pre-K to grade 5, proposed), Pattengill (6-8, proposed) and Eastern (9-12). * Literacy & Math/International Studies: Grand River (K-5) * Tuition-Free Montessori: Wexford (age 4 through grade 6). * Leadership, law, and government: Wainwright (K-6).
