Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs rallied from an early deficit and scored the go-ahead run on an error in the seventh inning to snap a four-game losing streak and defeat the Kane County Cougars 4-3 Saturday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 21-24 on the second half and 59-55 overall. The Cougars got out to an early lead against Chiefs starter Ryan Searle with consecutive hits in the second. Jason Christian led off with a double and scored easily on a double to right by Max Stassi. Stassi took third when Nelson Perez's throw to the infield sailed past three defenders, but Searle got out of the jam with the Chiefs down 1-0. After Searle struck out Rashun Dixon to end the third with two in scoring position, the Chiefs got even in the fourth. Logan Watkins led off with a triple to right-center and scored without a throw on a sacrifice fly by Matt Cerda to deep right. The Chiefs took their first lead since Sunday in the top of the fifth. Perez drew a lead-off walk from Dan Straily and Brandon May crushed a two-run homer past the scoreboard in left-center. The blast is the fourth overall for May this season, but his first in a Chiefs uniform. The lead was short-lived as Kane County rallied against Searle in the bottom of the inning. Leonardo Gil started the inning with a single and moved to second on a basehit by Connor Crumbliss. Jose Crisotomo sacrificed to move both runners up 90 feet and Anthony Aliotti tied the game with a single to left. The game stayed tied as both teams went to the bullpen in the seventh. Perez led off with a walk from AJ Huttenlocker and moved to second on a groundout by May. Luis Flores hit a grounder to short and Mike Gilmartin threw late behind Perez at third to put runners on the corners with one out. Anthony Giansanti hit a grounder back to the mound and Huttenlocker threw high off the glove of Gilmartin and into centerfield. Perez scored easily for a 4-3 Chiefs lead though Flores was thrown out trying to advance to third on the plate. Yohan Gonzalez came on in the eighth for the Chiefs and allowed a leadoff single to Dixon. Christian tried to sacrifice but Gonzalez made a great play and forced Dixon at second base. A wild pitch moved Christian to second before Gonzalez retired the next two to escape the inning. In the ninth the Cougars threatened again against closer Corey Martin. Gil led off with a single to right and Tyreace House pinch-ran at first base. Martin struck out Crumbliss before Gil advanced to second on a groundout by Crisotomo. Martin ended the game by striking out Aliotti to preserve the win. Searle allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five. Manolin DeLeon (1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings in which he allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two. Gonzalez allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning. Martin earned his fourth save with a shutout inning in which he allowed one hit and struck out two.
