August 14, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps scored 12 runs on 21 hits, routing the South Bend Silver Hawks 12-3 in the opener of a three game series at Fifth Third Ballpark. Even with the tough loss, South Bend remains 3.5 games out of a playoff spot thanks to Lansing's loss to Fort Wayne on Saturday evening.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Hernan Perez RBI single, the Whitecaps scored seven runs on eight hits in the third inning against South Bend starter Adam Worthington (LP, 3-5) to blow the game open. Perez had another RBI single as part of the big inning, but he wasn't alone as the Whitecaps sent 12 men to the plate, while also taking advantage of two Silver Hawks errors.

From there, the rout was on as the Whitecaps continued to tack on runs until the final margin was 12-3. In the game, South Bend set a new team high with 21 hits allowed, while also tying the marks for most hits in an inning (8) and most runs in an inning (7).

Most of the damage was done against Worthington, who fell to 0-4 as a starter after being 3-1 in relief. Worthington allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits over his 3.0 innings on the mound. Rafael Quezada (ND) followed with 3.1 innings and Chris Odegaard (ND) pitched the final 1.2 innings, with both relievers allowing two runs on the night.

Corey Jones had four hits and a RBI for West Michigan, who had at least one hit from every member of their starting lineup. Wade Gaynor, Tony Plagman, and Avisail Garcia all added three hits apiece.

South Bend's offense was led by Keon Broxton with three hits, a RBI, and a run scored. Bobby Borchering had two hits and a RBI while Ender Inciarte drove in the other run for the Silver Hawks.

Trevor Feeney (WP, 10-11) benefitted from all the runs, but also pitched a solid game in earning the win. The right hander allowed just one run on seven hits over 6.0 innings. Kevan Hess (SV, 1) allowed two runs in the ninth, but pitched the final three innings of the blowout to earn the save.

The important three game series continues with a matinee Sunday beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Diogenes Rosario (4-6, 4.01 ERA) will take the ball for South Bend against West Michigan's LHP Jared Wesson (5-1, 2.40 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
