Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks completed a three-game sweep over the Great Lakes Loons Friday night with a 10-5 victory. Loons pitchers walked nine South Bend hitters en route to their fourth straight loss, a season-long losing streak.
For the second straight game, the Loons scored a first inning run on an Angelo Songco sacrifice fly. But the Silver Hawks responded with four in the bottom half. Loons starter Greg Wilborn (2-1) struggled with his control in the frame, facing nine, walking four and throwing 54 pitches.
Trailing 5-2, the Loons scored two in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Brian Ruggiano to cut the SB lead to one.
But the Silver Hawks exploded for five in the bottom half of the sixth to take a commanding lead. Lefty Andy Suiter began the inning with two walks and a single. Steve Smith entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs and surrendered all of the inherited runs and two of his own.
The Loons out-hit the Silver Hawks 12-10 in the game. Nick Buss led the way with three hits at the top of the order. Ruggiano, J.T. Wise and Blake Smith all had two hits each.
Saturday night, the Loons (76-40 overall, 33-14 second half) begin a three-game series in Bowling Green, KY against the Hot Rods. Left-hander Ryan Christenson (2-0, 4.67 ERA) is slated to start for the Loons. Right-hander Albert Suarez (0-3, 5.79) is scheduled to start for BG. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
