Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - The night was warm, the crowd was huge, the game was close, and the fireworks burned bright. The only thing missing on this quintessential summer night was a win for the home team.
The Quad Cities River Bandits scored two in the top of the 11th and quelled a Bees rally in the bottom half to take the series opener by a score of 7-6 on Saturday night in front of a season-high crowd of 2,466 at Community Field.
Rainel Rosario led off the 11th with a solo homer off of Matt Morizio (L, 0-1) to put Quad Cities up, and C.J. Beatty's triple quickly followed. After Ted Obregon struck out and Edgar Lara was intentionally walked, Frederick Parejo sent a sharp grounder to third that enabled Beatty to come home with the insurance tally.
What appeared to be a comfortable margin became much less stable when Hilton Richardson tripled off of Jose Rada (W, 1-0) with two outs. Whit Merrifield legged out an infield single one batter later to bring home Richardson, but Alex McClure's soft liner was gloved by Devin Goodwin at second to secure the Bandit win.
Extra innings became necessary when Quad Cities tied the game at five in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a double play. Until that point, the Bees had led since Jose Bonilla's two-run home run in the second put them up 3-2.
McClure led the home club with a 3-for-6 night, with Merrifield, Bonilla, Richardson, and Ben Theriot logging multi-hit games as well. Jake Kuebler finished 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at seven games.
Tyler Sample started, but left with an undisclosed injury with a runner on and a 3-0 count on Rosario in the third. The righty allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks in two innings.
The Bees and River Bandits face off in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 on Louisa Communications Kids Day at Community Field. Kids can run the bases after the game, and one will even go home with a brand new bike!
