Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs got out of multiple jams in the first four innings and used clutch hitting to capture a 3-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Friday night. Anthony Giansanti and Greg Rohan each went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the contest. Peoria improves to 21-19 on the season while moving to 2-2 on the 11-game homestand.

Control was an issue early and often for Chiefs' starter Cam Greathouse as Clinton threatened in the top of the first. Matt Browning walked and Stefen Romero reached on a fielding error by shortstop Arismendy Alcantara before Jabari Blash walked to load the bases. With two gone, Peoria got out of the early jam as Julio Morban flew out to right.

Clinton continued to put pressure on Peoria in the first half of the game as Greathouse could not find the strike zone. In the second frame, Greathouse walked Kalian Sams to leadoff the inning and he advanced to third, but no further. In the fourth, Sams walked again and stole two bases, but was stranded 90 feet away for the second time. Greathouse left after the fourth without allowing a run or a hit, but with five walks issued.

The LumberKings broke through in the top of the fifth against Chiefs' reliever Alvaro Sosa to make it 1-0. With one out, Carlos Ramirez reached safely on a bunt single and stole second base. Browning advanced Ramirez to third with a line drive base hit into left before Romero reached on a force attempt, with a throwing error by Greg Rohan scoring Ramirez. Browning traveled to third on the play, but Romero was caught stealing second and Mickey Wiswall flew out to end the frame.

Peoria answered in the bottom of the sixth to take its first lead of the game against LumberKings starter Forrest Snow. Rohan hit a hard single into right field that was misplayed by Blash, which allowed Rohan to advance to third on the two-base error. With one gone, Richard Jones smashed his 10th double of the season into the left-center field gap to score Rohan and even the game. The Chiefs kept the threat alive as Micah Gibbs and Elliot Soto walked to load the bags. Anthony Giansanti grounded into a force out at second base before Clinton shortstop Jake Schlander attempted to turn the double play. His throw to second was off the mark, which allowed Jones to score from third and Peoria grabbed a 2-1 lead on the error.

The Chiefs' extended their advantage to 3-1 in the seventh against Snow. Pierre LePage singled into center and stole second base before he traveled to third on a wild pitch. With two down, Rohan singled into right for his team-leading 28th RBI of the season and the final run of the game.

Greathouse did not allow a hit or run in his four innings of work. He struck out two and walked five batters. Sosa gave up one run on three hits in two innings pitched. He struck out two and did not allow a walk. Bryce Shafer entered the game in the seventh and pitched two shutout innings. He did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out one. Marcus Hatley pitched the final frame and allowed one hit while striking out two for his second save in as many days.
