Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars won their seventh game out of the last 10 on Friday night and needed 13 innings to do it. They never trailed during the 3-hour, 41-minute marathon and beat the Beloit Snappers, 4-3, in the opener of a four-game series at Pohlman Field. Geulin Beltre was a double shy of the cycle, Leonel Santiago tossed his seventh quality start and Dusty Odenbach fanned six over 3 2/3 innings for the win.
Beltre homered in the fifth off Pat Dean to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead and then singled home Lane Adams in the seventh to make it 2-0. Meanwhile Santiago tossed seven frames of three-hit shutout ball with two walks and seven strikeouts. It was his seventh quality start in a row, and each of the last five has lasted at least seven innings. He left with a 2-0 lead but had to take a no-decision. It was the 13th quality start by a Cougar in the last 21 games.
The Snappers rallied for one run in the eighth off Jon Keck and tied the game with two outs in the ninth against Matt Mitchell. Mitchell got out of a jam to force extra innings, and the Cougars took a lead in the top of the 10th. Angel Franco singled home Beltre for a 3-2 game, but the Snappers tied in the 10th on a passed ball. Odenbach (2-1) erased a bases-loaded, one-out jam in that 10th to keep the game going and eventually was rewarded with the win. Travis Jones drew a bases-loaded walk in the 13th from Ryan O'Rourke (0-1) for the game-winning run.
The Cougars (16-26) and Snappers (21-20) continue the four-game series Saturday night at 6:30 CT. Yordano Ventura (0-1, 12.00) will face Andrei Lobanov (0-3, 6.28). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. CT.
