Dayton, Ohio - The Lake County Captains battled back from a three-run deficit to defeat the Dayton Dragons 9-5 on Friday night in the series opener before a crowd of 8,691 at Fifth Third Field.
The Dragons built leads of 3-0 and 5-3 before Lake County rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to take 7-5 lead. The Captains added two more in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Dayton's Dominic D'Anna led an 11-hit attack, going 2 for 5 with three runs batted in. D'Anna had run-scoring singles in the first and sixth innings and also drove in a run with a ground out in the third. Donald Lutz belted a solo home run for Dayton in the fourth, his eighth homer of the year. David Vidal, Jaren Matthews, and Tucker Barnhart each had two hits.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Renken left the game with the lead but was not involved in the decision. Renken worked the first six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and six strikeouts.
Dayton reliever Pat Doyle (2-1) was charged with the loss. Doyle entered the game to start the seventh inning with a 5-3 lead and allowed two hits and two walks in the inning. He was charged with four runs (two earned) as Lake County took advantage of two Dayton errors in the inning to take the lead.
Dayton (20-21) will host Lake County (19-21) in the second game of a four-game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Josh Smith (3-3, 1.91) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2. Cincinnati Reds Assistant Director of Media Relations Jamie Ramsey, author of the blog "Better Off Red" at reds.com, will provide commentary.
