Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - The TinCaps swept a doubleheader against the Lake County Captains, winning 9-2 in Game 1 and outlasting the Captains, 4-3 in 11 innings in the nightcap.
The TinCaps came firing out of the gate in Game 1, scoring four runs in the first inning. Jose Dore drilled a three-run homer to cap the rally. Fort Wayne tacked on another run in the second on Jake Blackwood ¬â¢s RBI single. The TinCaps scored three more in the third thanks to an RBI triple by B.J. Guinn, a wild pitch which brought Guinn home and a run-scoring single by Luis Domoromo which made it 8-0. Chris Bisson ¬â¢s RBI single in the fourth inning pushed the lead to 9-0.
Lake County got on the board in the fourth inning when Alex Monsalve bounced into an RBI fielder ¬â¢s choice. The Captains didn ¬â¢t score again until the seventh when Ronny Rodriguez belted his first professional home run, a solo shot to left-center to cut the lead to 9-2.
RHP Keyvius Sampson (6-1) worked five strong innings to pick up the win; Lake County RHP Kyle Blair (2-2) issued six walks and didn ¬â¢t survive the third inning as he took the loss. Six of the runners who scored for the TinCaps reached on walks; eight of the nine runs scored with two outs.
In the nightcap, Lake County took a 2-0 lead with unearned runs in the second and third. Fort Wayne stormed back in the top of the fourth. After Captains RHP Jordan Cooper retired ten straight to open the game, Rymer Liriano broke up the perfect game with a one-out single and scored on a double by Domoromo. Blackwood followed with a game-tying single to make it 2-2.
The TinCaps took the lead in the top of the sixth when Liriano led off with a double and Blackwood drove him in with a single two batters later. Lake County tied it again in the bottom of the frame on Anthony Gallas ¬â¢ two-out RBI double.
The game stayed tied at 3-3 all the way into the 11th inning. Rico Noel drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a wild throw and scored when the center fielder backing up the play saw the ball go under his glove. In the bottom of the 11th , Gallas singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. But Alex Lavisky lifted a fly to center which Noel caught, fired behind Gallas and doubled him off at second base to end the game.
The TinCaps upped their record to 16-24 while Lake County dipped to 18-21.
Fort Wayne takes on the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. TinCaps RHP Matt Branham (2-3) duels with Whitecaps RHP Kevin Eichhorn (2- 2).
