Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed pitcher Luis Liria has been promoted to the Chiefs roster from Short-Season Single-A Boise. Peoria also adds left-handed pitcher Brent Ebinger who rejoins the club after one game in Double-A Tennessee.
Liria, 21, started five games for Boise Hawks and compiled a 2-1 record with a 2.84 ERA. He is expected to enter the Chiefs starting rotation on Sunday against Fort Wayne. He has struck out 24 batters in 25.1 innings this season and has held right-handed batters to a .179 average. Liria last pitched on Monday and took a 4-0 loss to Everett allowing two earned runs on four hits over four innings. In five starts this season he has gone at least five innings four times with a season-high six innings on July 6 against Yakima. On July 1, Liria pitched five shutout innings with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts in a victory at Yakima. Last season, the right-hander made three end of the season appearances with the Chiefs, going 1-0 with a 10.29 ERA. He also spent 12 games with the Mesa Cubs in the Arizona Rookie League and compiled a 2-2 record and a 2.40 ERA. A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Liria was signed as a non-drafted free agent on 9/14/07 and began his professional career in the Dominican Summer League in 2008.
Ebinger, 23, appeared in one game with Double-A Tennesse after his July 9 promotion. He pitched two innings and allowed two runs on four hits in a relief appearance against Chattanooga. Both runs allowed came on solo homers as the Smokies lost 6-1. Prior to the call-up, Ebinger pitched five times for the Chiefs going 1-1 with a save and a 1.32 ERA. He struck out six and walked one in 13 2/3 innings. He joined the Chiefs on June 14 and threw five innings the next night in a loss to Wisconsin in which he allowed just one run. Ebinger filled the long relief role again on June 28 when he followed Graham Hicks at Wisconsin and earned a 4-1 win. The Gallatin, TN native earned his first professional save on Wednesday in the 3-2 win over Beloit as he retired the Snappers 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth. A 2010 32nd round draft pick out of Lambuth University, Ebinger did not allow a run in his final 7 2/3 innings. Before joining the Chiefs, he went 5-4 with a 7.12 ERA in 15 games and three starts this season for Advanced-A Daytona in the Florida State League.
The Chiefs roster remains one player short of the 25-player limit as the team kicks off a six-game homestand Wednesday against the defending MWL Champion Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians). Wednesday is dollar night with $1 hot dogs, $1 sodas and $1 ice cream sandwiches while Thursday is a Thirsty Thursday with $2 domestic draft beers and fountain sodas. Friday, July 15 is 80s night with a special appearance by the ZOOperstars! Tickets are available online at www.peoriachiefs.com, by calling 1-866-MYTICKET and at the O'Brien Field Box Office.
