Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Bandits got out to an early lead and never looked back, beating the visiting Dayton Dragons 7-5 on Wednesday in front of 2,459 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

After trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Bandits answered with two home runs to take a 3-1 lead. Second baseman Kolten Wong (3-for-4) led off for the Bandits and sent the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a leadoff home run. Shortly after, Oscar Taveras (3-for-4, 1 RBI) singled and was driven home by Cody Stanley (1-for-4), who homered to give the Bandits a lead 3-1. Quad Cities scattered four more runs through the sixth inning on their way to its season-high sixth straight win.

The Dragons threatened in the ninth inning when they scored three runs on a single. An error on Packy Elkins extended the threat before Aiden Lucas (S, 7) came in to shut the door.

Bandit starter Ryan Copeland (1-1) pitched seven solid innings allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out a season-high nine batters for his first win of the season. Copeland didn't walk a single batter in the game. Lucas earned the save by recording the final out in the ninth, a strikeout of Billy Hamilton.

Copeland was opposed by Dragons starter Stalin Gerson (3-1). The right-hander hadn't allowed a home run all season before allowing a pair of round trippers in the first inning. Gerson allowed a season-high four runs on a seven hits, also a season-high. It was his first loss of the season. Chad Rogers relived Gerson in the fifth and went two innings allowing three more runs on five hits while striking out three.

Michael Swinson chipped in on offense for the Bandits and went 2-for-3 with an RBI while extending his hitting streak to a season-high six games. Wong extended his own hitting streak to nine games with his 3-for-4 night. Taveras also extended his hitting streak to eight games with his 3-for-4 night. This is his second notable hitting streak of the season, after an 11-game streak to start the season.

The Bandits continue the series with the Dayton Dragons on Thursday. Seth Blair (5-3, 4.23) will oppose Dragons starter Daniel Corcino (8-4, 3.12). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park on a Thirst-Day Thursday featuring $2 pop and beer specials. Former CHiPS star Erik Estrada will be making an appearance on bike night at the ballpark to sign autographs, take pictures and meet fans.
