South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Beloit, WI - The offensive problems continued for South Bend on Wednesday night, with the Silver Hawks managing just one run on five hits in a 5-1 loss to the Beloit Snappers. The Silver Hawks have now lost nine of their last 10 and scored just 20 runs in those 10 games.
Beloit scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning against Tyler Green (LP, 3-4). Adam Bryant and Jairo Perez had back-to-back singles and Michael Gonzales took the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for a 3-0 lead. It was the 13th home run of the year for Gonzalez and he raised his RBI total to 63 - just four behind Yazy Arbelo for the league lead.
The Snappers added another run in the second with a RBI double from Bryant and pushed their fifth run across in the sixth inning when Daniel Santana had a RBI double against Patrick Schuster (ND).
The Silver Hawks were held without a hit through the first five innings, but then looked like they might have a big inning in the sixth against Beloit starter B.J. Hermsen (WP, 9-6). Ender Inciarte and Gerson Montilla singled with one out, and then Zach Walters singled to center to load the bases. When the throw by the centerfielder went array, Inciarte scored and Montilla moved to third, but Walters stayed at first. That proved costly because Yazy Arbelo then hit into a double play to end the inning, leaving the Silver Hawks down 4-1.
That was the only run and the only hits allowed by Hermsen in his 7.0 innings. The run was charged as unearned as he picked up his ninth win with two walks and two strikeouts. Michael Tonkin (ND) pitched the final two innings with four strikeouts to wrap up the Snappers victory.
The Silver Hawks and Snappers continue the three game set with game two on Thursday night at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Mike Bolsinger (2-3, 2.38 ERA) will start for South Bend against RHP Adrian Salcedo (5-3, 2.81 ERA) of the Snappers. Pre-game coverage begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
