Chiefs Pitching Dominates in 2-1 Win

PEORIA, IL- Arturo Reyes allowed just one run over six innings and the bullpen pitched three scoreless innings as the Peoria Chiefs beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 2-1 on Wednesday night. The win is the Chiefs fourth in a row and improves their record to 4-1 in the second half and 41-33 overall.

Cedar Rapids scored first for the second straight game against the Chiefs, this time in the third inning. JD Williams led off with a double up the first base line, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a ground out to first.

The Chiefs tied it at one in the bottom of the inning against Kohl Stewart, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft. Richy Pedroza began the frame with a double to right and got to third on a wild pitch. Vaughn Bryan followed with a single to left to score Pedroza.

Peoria took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Mason Katz drilled a one-out solo home run to left. The homer is his team-best 12th of the season and eighth at home.

Reyes (5-3) pitched the first six innings allowing one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts to earn the win. Kevin Herget went the next two innings on one hit. Steve Sabatino retired the only batter he faced and Chris Perry got the final two outs, striking out both batters for his second save.
