Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Ball Club, Inc. (d.b.a. Cedar Rapids Kernels) is pleased to announce they have entered discussions to purchase the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League.
The purchase is subject to the approval of the Northwoods League and obtaining a lease for Riverfront Stadium from the City of Waterloo. The transaction is being reviewed by the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, having already been approved by the Midwest League and the President of Minor League Baseball.
"Waterloo has a strong baseball tradition dating back to 1904. We are looking to continue that tradition for a long time", said Cedar Rapids Ball Club's president, Gary Keoppel.
Kernels General Manager Doug Nelson said, "We are very excited with the possibility to begin a new chapter in the history of both organizations. Combining the resources of both operations will make both two clubs stronger."
The Waterloo Bucks would remain in Waterloo and continue to play at Riverfront Stadium with Dan Corbin as the Bucks' General Manager.
"Partnering with Cedar Rapids would strengthen the Waterloo Bucks front office as they bring additional resources and ideas that would improve the fan experience at future Bucks games", said Corbin.
The Waterloo Bucks are part of the Northwoods League, an 18-team league whose teams consist of college players playing a 72-game schedule. The Bucks play in renovated Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.
The City of Cedar Rapids has had professional baseball since 1890 and has been a member of the Midwest League since 1962. They are currently the Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
