Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - The Kernels tallied one run for the second straight game as the Peoria Chiefs won 2-1 at Dozer Park on Wednesday night. The Kernels are now 1-5 on the road trip to open up the second half. They look to avoid the sweep at Peoria on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
Arturo Reyes (5-3) held the Kernels offense to one run on five hits over six innings on the mound for Peoria's victory. He struck out five and walked one, the only walk the Kernels have drawn in the first two games of the series.
Kohl Stewart (1-4) again pitched well but suffered the loss for the Kernels. He went five innings and allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Stewart's earned run average is now at 2.53 after 13 starts this season.
The Kernels scored first with a single run in the third inning. J.D. Williams doubled past first base to get the inning started. He advanced to third base on a fly out by Jon Murphy. With the infield drawn in, Williams hurried home on Ryan Walker's RBI groundout, putting the Kernels up 1-0.
Peoria quickly tied the game 1-1 in their half of the third inning. Richy Pedroza began the inning by pulling a double over the head off Kernels right fielder Murphy. He moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored when Vaughn Bryan slapped a RBI single the opposite way into left field.
Mason Katz gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when he drilled his 12th home run of the season to left field. Peoria has now homered in the fourth inning in back to back games. It also marks the second straight game where the fourth-inning home run was the final tally of the game.
The Kernels offense left a runner at third base in both the fourth and fifth innings. Bryan Haar singled with one out in the fourth inning and found himself at third base but did not score. Williams collected his second double of the night after pulling the two-bagger down the right field line to lead off the fifth. He was left stranded at third base to end the inning as Peoria kept the 2-1 advantage.
Kevin Herget relieved Reyes in the seventh inning and retired the first six batters he faced, getting through the end of the eighth inning. He allowed a leadoff single to Bryan Haar in the ninth inning and exited the game. Steven Sabatino entered the game and faced Alex Swim. Swim's sacrifice bunt attempt was hit back to Sabatino, who was able to throw to second base and force out Haar. Sabatino exited as Peoria brought on their third pitcher of the ninth inning, Chris Perry. A wild pitch from Perry sent Swim to second base, where he was lifted for pinch-runner Tanner Vavra. However, Perry struck out the final two hitters of the game - Jason Kanzler and J.D. Williams - to preserve the win and collect his second save.
Jared Wilson went two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing three hits while striking out one. Chris Mazza added a scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
The Kernels finish the seven-game road trip on Thursday night at with the final game in Peoria at 7:00 p.m. RHP Aaron Slegers (5-4, 5.73) gets the start for the Kernels while the Chiefs counters with RHP Alex Reyes (4-5, 4.75)
