Contreras, Whitecaps coast past Lugs, 8-2

LANSING, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (3-3, 44-32) rolled to an 8-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (3-3, 35-40) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Whitecaps clubbed 11 hits, handing Lansing starter Frank Viola III (Loss, 2-1) his first loss since returning to professional baseball this season. Viola allowed six runs in 4.2 innings on five hits and a career-high six walks.

West Michigan took a 3-1 lead in the second inning with a three-run home run by third baseman Francisco Contreras (3-for-4, 4 RBIs).

Lansing closed within a run after Justin Atkinson hit an RBI single in the fourth, but the Whitecaps answered with three more runs in the fifth to pull ahead 6-2.

West Michigan starter Kevin Ziomek (Win, 6-5) allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

Third baseman Mitch Nay hit an RBI single in the first inning. He leads the Lugnuts with 37 RBIs this season.

Lansing and West Michigan play the rubber match of the three-game series on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Coming off of a six-inning, eight strikeout start against Bowling Green last week, righty Chase De Jong (0-4, 4.40) starts on the mound for the Lugnuts, countered by West Michigan right-hander Chad Green (2-2, 3.08). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
