The Edmonton Oil Kings have selected 19-year-old J.P. Szaszkiewicz from the Chiefs roster in the WHL's expansion draft. Szaszkiewicz recently completed his third season in a Spokane uniform and scored a career high eight goals and 16 points in 63 games.

"It is difficult for us to lose J.P., but at the same time it will be a great opportunity for him to play in his hometown," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. "J.P. is very committed, a versatile player and a great team guy. We wish him the best in Edmonton."

"Going into this we knew we were going to lose a good player," Chiefs Head Coach Bill Peters said. "We did lose a good player, and a good person, in J.P. I have known him since the 2005 World Under- 17 tournament and he provided leadership on that team, just like he did in Spokane and like he will continue to do in Edmonton. I thank him for his contributions the last two years and wish him nothing but the best."

Through his Chiefs career, Szaszkiewicz played 169 games, scored 11 goals, 32 points and recorded 118 penalty minutes.

Szaszkiewicz will be playing for the expansion Oil Kings in his hometown of Edmonton, the 22nd and newest franchise in the WHL. The Oil Kings will begin play in 2007-08. As a part of the expansion process, Edmonton was allowed to select one player off each team's roster after a protected list was supplied to them earlier in the morning.
