Chiefs Fail to Gain Momentum against Red-Hot Silvertips

December 2, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Spokane Chiefs News Release

Everett, Wash. - The division-leading Everett Silvertips didn't take their foot off the gas in a dominant 9-2 win over the visiting Spokane Chiefs Wednesday night.

The Silvertips started things off right away, with a goal from Hunter Campbell just 1:20 into the game. The Chiefs responded five minutes later when rookie forward Yannick Proske netted his fifth goal of the season. Proske is now tied for the seventh-most goals among the league's rookies.

Everett quickly answered with back-to-back goals of their own from Jackson Berezowski at 11:07 and Niko Huuhtanen at 14:38 to give themselves a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period.

The second period was relatively quiet until 12:13 when Olen Zellweger netted Everett's first of three power play goals. Spokane team captain Jack Finley answered at 15:01 with a drive into the net to make it 4-2. One minute later, Huuhtanen shot his second goal of the night to stretch the Silvertips' lead to 5-3 at the end of the second period.

The third period was all Everett, as four different skaters scored - Berezowski, Jacob Wright, Alex Swetlikoff and Campbell. Swetlikoff and Campbell's were rapid-fire power play goals that came at 9:34 and 10:01, making it 9-2 and essentially putting the nail in Spokane's coffin for the night.

Everett controlled much of the game, outshooting the Chiefs 63-20, including 24-4 in the final period. Rookie netminder Manny Panghli got the start in net for Spokane and went 40-for-49 before he was replaced by Mason Beaupit halfway through the third period. Beaupit turned aside all 14 of his shots faced.

Spokane's special teams struggled, going 0-for-1 on the power play and 1-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs will kick off the holiday season when they come home Friday night to host the Prince George Cougars for the first time since 2019. It's the holiday extravaganza at Spokane Arena, so come with all your jolly spirit!
