May 17, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings en route to a 5-1 win against the Clinton LumberKings Friday night in their first game in newly named Dozer Park. The win bumped the Chiefs to 20-19 on the year and past Clinton in the Midwest League's Western Division.
After Tyrell Jenkins pitched a scoreless first inning, his first in Peoria since throwing the complete game shutout on May 5th against Fort Wayne, the LumberKings got on the board in the second. On the inning's first pitch Patrick Kivlehan smashed a home run to left putting Clinton up 1-0.
LumberKings pitcher Scott DeCecco held the Chiefs in check until the third inning when Charlie Tilson opened the frame with the double and moved to third on Casey Rasmus sacrifice bunt. Breyvic Valera knocked in Tilson with a sacrifice fly to right field, tying the score at 1-1 with his 11th RBI of the year. The Chiefs weren't done as Alex Mejia singled to center field to keep the inning alive with two outs. Jacob Wilson followed with his sixth double of the season, driving in Mejia and putting the Chiefs up 2-1. It was Wilson's team leading 34th RBI.
After a scoreless fourth frame from Jenkins, the Chiefs pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Patrick Wisdom reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Brock Hebert, and Ildemaro Vargas bunted him to third. Carson Kelly abandoned the Chiefs' small ball strategy by blasting a home run to center field to score Wisdom and extend the Chiefs lead to 4-1. It was Kelly's first long ball this season.
Following an hour and fourteen minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning, the Chiefs added another run in the bottom of the frame. After the first two batters were retired, Wilson reached second on a double to left field. It looked like the inning would be over when Walton grounded to Hebert at short, but a throwing error put the batter aboard and Wilson at third. With a runner in scoring position, Wisdom singled home Wilson for a 5-1 Chiefs lead.
Tyrell Jenkins (3-2), who was removed following the rain delay, gave up one run on four hits in four innings while striking four. He earned his third straight win, two coming at home. Joe Donofrio pitched three innings in relief striking out four and giving up one hit. Zach Petrick tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out one and not allowing a hit.
