Burlington Bees News Release

Reid Scoggins and Jake Boyd allowed a combined eight runs and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the Burlington Bees 8-4 on Friday night at Community Field.

The Burlington Bees (13-24) have been relying on their pitching for the majority of the season, but the Rattlers (19-19) got to Scoggins (0-1) early for the second time in a row. Scoggins, who walked six batters in his last appearance in Wisconsin, could not make it out of the third inning. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits and four walks.

Burlington scored the first run of the game when Wendell Soto walked, stole second and third and came home on a single by Michael Bolaski. Bolaski finished the day 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The lead was short-lived, as the Rattlers scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-1 lead after five innings. In the third inning, Scoggins allowed a RBI single to Adam Giacalone and a two-run single to Alfredo Rodriguez. Kenny Hatcher came in and was solid, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings.

Boyd did not get any help from his defense, allowing two unearned runs on two errors by Bolaski in the fifth. One run scored on an error by Bolaski and the other came home on a sacrifice fly.

Ryan Gibbard (3-1) drew the start for Wisconsin and moved his record to 3-0 in his three starts. He allowed two runs in 5.2 innings. In the sixth, Burlington finally got to Gibbard. Kyle Johnson reached on a one-out walk and later stole second and scored on a double by Wade Hinkle. Bolaski and Chevy Clarke walked to load the bases with two outs. Taylor Wall came out of the bullpen and struck out Andrew Ray, the potential tying run, to keep the 5-2 Rattlers lead in tact.

The Rattlers added three more runs in the seventh off of Boyd on a two-run double by Clint Coulter that scored Giacalone and Rodriguez. Coulter scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. The Bees scored two runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as they dropped to 5-14 at Community Field.

Burlington and Wisconsin will square off in the second game of the series on Saturday night. Aaron Newcomb will face Eric Semmelhack at 6:30 p.m.
