Kane County Cougars News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - In a see-saw battle that was tied three separate times, Travis Harrison delivered the walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning as the Kane County Cougars dropped the opener of a four-game series to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-3 on Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After the Kane County Cougars (9-20) danced around trouble by stranding runners in scoring position in the 10th and 11th innings, Nathan Dorris walked the leadoff hitter in the 12th. A sacrifice bunt and wild pitch moved Jorge Polanco to third base with one out. Cedar Rapids Kernals' third baseman Travis Harrison followed and scaled a ball down the third base line past a diving Jeimer Candelario to drive in the winning run.

The loss overshadows the excellent pitching by the Cougars on Friday evening. In his second start of the season, Dillon Maples worked five innings and allowed just two runs on two hits. J.D. Williams hit one of his two RBI triples in the third inning to tie the game at one, and a wild pitch allowed Polanco to score in the fourth.

Lendy Castillo followed Maples and worked around trouble stranding five runners in scoring position over five innings over work, in which the righty allowed just one run while striking out four and walking three. Williams' second RBI triple in the seventh accounted for the only run against Castillo which gave the Kernels a 3-2 lead at the time.

The Cougars had tied the game in the eighth inning with two outs. Kernels' starter Tyler Duffy worked 7.2 innings, allowing six hits and striking out five. He was knocked out of the game in the eighth when Bijan Rademacher reached on a bunt single. David Hurlbut relieved Duffy and promptly gave up a bloop fly ball to Dan Vogelbach. The shallow pop fly tipped off the glove of the second baseman in shallow right field before he ran into right fielder Jeremias Pineda, giving Rademacher enough time to score from first.

Rademacher finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Jeimer Candelario had two hits in five at bats, including a double and a run scored. Maunel Soliman worked a scoreless twelfth inning to earn his third win of the year.

The Cougars continue a seven-game, eight-day road trip with the second game of a four-game set against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday at 5:05 p.m., the Cougars will send Pierce Johnson (1-3) to the mound against Jose Berrios (3-1). The Cougars will return home on May 25th at 6:30 p.m. against the Beloit Snappers. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
