Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that Graham Hicks will return to the roster from the disabled list and he is scheduled to start Friday night at Kane County. To make room for Hicks on the Chiefs roster, outfielder Matt Szczur has been placed on the temporarily inactive list while he graduates from Villanova University.
Hicks is the second pitcher in a row to be activated from the DL in as many days as Dallas Beeler started Thursday night for the first time since April 27. Hicks last pitched in Beloit on April 28 when he allowed three runs on six hits over five innings in a no-decision. He was placed on the disabled list on May 2 with a flexor-pronator injury to his left arm. In four starts this season Hicks is 0-1 with a 2.75 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings. Hicks will throw in the 40 pitch range on Friday and then be followed by the originally scheduled starter Su-Min Jung.
Szczur is hitting .320 with seven RBI, five doubles, 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 25 games. He has led off in every game he has played this season and has at least one hit in all 11 home games he has started. Szczur will be in Philadelphia all weekend for the graduation ceremonies at Villanova University where he played both baseball and football. He is expected to rejoin the team for the 11-game homestand which begins Tuesday against Quad Cities.
The move leaves the Chiefs with just two bench players but 14 pitchers for the three-game series in Kane County. After Hicks and Jung pitch against Kane County in the 7:00 p.m. Friday game, Cam Greathouse starts Saturday night. The Chiefs Sunday afternoon starter is still to be announced. Peoria was 7-2 on a nine-game homestand and they swept Kane County last weekend with wins of 4-1, 6-1 and 4-0.
