South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Matt Helm's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 4-2 series opening victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Friday night. The win improved the Silver Hawks to 3-2 on their current six day, eight game road trip.
The last time the Silver Hawks were in Bowling Green, the team dropped two tough ones. A couple of unearned runs after throwing errors from Ramon Castillo gave the Hot Rods a 2-1 victory on April 25th, and Jeremy Erben allowed a walk off three run homer on April 26th as the Hawks dropped both games to the Hot Rods.
Both Castillo and Erben (WP, 1-1) had a part of the comeback on Friday, providing a big assist to Helm's heroics. Castillo had a two run double in the top of the eighth to tie the game, and Erben found his redemption on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season.
The real hero was Helm, however, who walked and scored on Castillo's double in the eighth, and then took a 1-2 pitch from Omar Bencomo (LP, 1-1) off the wall in center in the ninth, scoring both Zach Walters and Yazy Arbelo for the 4-2 lead.
Both starter pitchers turned in solid outings, with Patrick Schuster (ND) allowing just two runs over his 7.0 innings for South Bend, and Eliazer Suero (ND) pitching 6.0 scoreless innings in his first start for Bowling Green. Neither starter factored in the decision.
Kyle Holloway had a solo homer for the Hot Rods and Todd Glaesman went 3-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Hot Rods' offensive attack.
The late rally helped the Silver Hawks overcome 11 runners left on base, including nine in the first six innings.
The four game series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 6:05 PM Eastern Time. RHP Bradin Hagens (2-1, 3.41 ERA) and RHP Enrique Burgos (1st Appearance) will be the two starters for the Silver Hawks, with Bowling Green sending RHP George Jensen (1-2, 7.88 ERA) and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser (2-3, 2.78 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
