
Bees "Walk Off" With 2-1 Win in 10 Innings

BURLINGTON, IA - The Burlington Bees (25-9) got a sacrifice fly to right field from 3B Wade Kirkland (2-3) to earn a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (20-15) before 511 fans in the opener of a three-game series at Community Field Friday night.
The Kernels scored a single run in the third inning. 3B Jesus Campos (1-4) hit an infield single and moved to second base on at throwing error by Kirkland. SS Jean Almanzar (1-4) grounded out to move Campos to third base. A bloop single to shallow left field by CF Travis Witherspoon (2-5) brought in Campos for a 1-0 lead.
The Bees tied the game in the eighth inning. LF Douglas Landaeta (0-2) walked and moved to third base on a single by Kirkland. C Daniel Petitti (1-3) hit a single to score Landaeta and tie it at 1-1.
In the 10th inning 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones (1-4) hit a single and Tyreace House (0-0) came into the game to run for him. House moved to second base on a walk by LF Douglas Landaeta (0-2). House moved to third base when CF Jose Rivero (0-4) reached first base on a fielder's choice. Landaeta was forced out at second base.
Kirkland's sacrifice fly allowed House to score and give the Bees the win.
The Bees and Kernels continue their series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. It's "Armed Forces Night" with free admission to all military personnel past and present with proper identification. It's also "Friends and Family Night" with everyone running the bases after the game. RHP Heath Nichols (1-2, 6.59) gets the start for Cedar Rapids against RHP Blake Hassebrock (2-0, 0.79) for Burlington.
