Chicago Sky Selects Currie in Dispersal Draft

CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky selected 6-0' guard/forward Monique "Mo" Currie with the first pick in the WNBA Dispersal Draft of Charlotte Sting players, held today.

Currie was the third overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft on April 5, 2006. She had an outstanding rookie season with the Sting, averaging 10 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 25 minutes. She finished the season ranked in the top fifteen among rookies in every statistical category, including fifth in scoring and second in assists, and she was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team. The addition of Currie to the lineup helped the Sting nearly double its win total from the 2005 season.

"Monique is a strong shooting guard, with three years of experience playing in the Final Four with Duke," said Bo Overton, head coach of the Chicago Sky. "She was the third pick in last year's draft, which gives us two young top-six picks - Candice Dupree and Monique - playing together. I'm looking forward to getting her on the court with our team."

In selecting Currie, the Sky adds a strong offensive and defensive presence. In 2006, Currie had some of her best performances against the world's best players, including a career high 22 points against Washington and former teammate Alana Beard. During the 2006 season she posted 15 double figure point totals and led the team in scoring in seven games.

In the off-season, Currie is a starting forward on Israel's Elitzur Achva Ramla team, which plays in the FIBA EuroCup. Prior to joining the Sting, Currie played for Duke University where she played in three Final Fours while averaging 15.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals in 140 career games. She earned Kodak All-American honors twice, joining current Washington Mystics guard Beard as the only players in Duke history to be selected as repeat honorees. She is only the third player in Duke history to score over 2,000 points and the first player in ACC history with over 2,000 points (2,122), 800 rebounds (874), 400 assists (413) and 200 steals (228). Currie's hometown is Washington, DC.

Sky players Candice Dupree and Liz (Shimek) Moeggenberg played with Currie on the undefeated 2005 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team.
