MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that they have selected nine-year veteran forward/center Tangela Smith in the dispersal draft from the Charlotte Sting.

Smith comes to the Lynx with career averages of 13.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and a 42.8 field goal percentage. She spent the first seven seasons of her career with Sacramento before joining Charlotte prior to the 2005 season. Smith is one of only 21 players in WNBA history to record more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She was selected to the 2006 WNBA Eastern Conference All-Star team.

"Tangela gives us a veteran post presence who has consistently averaged in double figures with five-plus rebounds each game," Lynx Chief Operating Officer Roger Griffith said. "She's a versatile player who has put up those numbers in every system she's been in and will be a great complement to Seimone Augustus and Nicole Ohlde. Her on- court skills and her leadership will be a huge asset to our young and developing roster."

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Smith played college basketball at Iowa before entering the WNBA. She was named Big Ten Player of the Year as a senior after posting 19.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 blocked shots and a 55.9 field goal percentage. Off the court, the Iowa grad is co-owner of a hair salon in Atlanta, a realtor and plans to pursue a modeling career.
