Chicago Hounds News Release

Get Back Jack!: The Chicago Hounds took on the Elmira Jackals Saturday night at the Sears Centre and gave the home-town crowd something to cheer about. After a poor performance Wednesday night at home, the Hounds came out roaring against the Jackals. Chris Gehrke got the emotions going when he took on Frank Littlejohn at center ice. The crowd exploded with appreciation after each player landed some nice punches. Just past the midway mark of the first period, Mike Brolsma scored his team leading fifth goal of the season when he helped the puck passed Elmira goalie Kris Tebbs off a wide point shot by Gehrke. At 16:14 of the first, Todd Grant re-directed a John Spoltore shot out of mid air to give the Hounds a two goal advantage.

In the second period, David Morelli netted a short-handed goal at 4:50 when he redirected a pass from Brian Cullaton. The Hounds answered with a short handed goal of their own when Kris Vernarsky grabbed an attempted pass by Tebbs out of the air and slammed it into an empty net. The Jackals struck right back on the next shift when Tommy Kotsopolous tied the game on a wrist shot that fooled Hounds goalie Marty Magers at 9:46. Hounds captain Steve Cygan thought he scored a goal but it was disallowed after the official ruled that it was played with a high-stick. However, Cygan fired his next attempt low-blocker side stretching the Hounds lead a little further.

The third period came and went with a goal for each team and Chicago skated away with a 5-3 victory. Magers made 31 saves on 34 shots while Kris Tebbs saved 37 of 42.

The Zoo Routs the Hounds: Chicago Hounds had problems early and often at the hands of the UHL's defending champions. The first goal against the Hounds came early in the first period when former NHL player Chris McAllister rifled a shot from the blueline that beat Magers low to the blocker side. The eventual game winning goal was surrendered to Kalamazoo captain, Nick Bootland at 7:20. Bootland would finish the contest with two goals.

The second period saw the Wings score three more goals which included Justin Cross , who would finish the game with a hat-trick. The Hounds had an endless parade of players make their way to the penalty box. Kalamazoo would net four power-play goals during the game.

The lone Hounds goal was scored by Mike Kautz on a deflected point shot by Chris Busby at 6:58 of the third period. Wings goalie Tom Askey would finish with 29 saves on 30 shots; Magers would finish with 32 saves on 41 shots.

A Mager Comeback:

After a disappointing game on Wednesday night that saw Magers allow nine goals, he came right back with a very strong performance on Saturday night against Elmira. Magers made big saves at the crucial times in the contest to ensure the Hounds would skate away with the victory. His teammates were very happy with the effort from their goalie. "Marty is a tireless worker. He practices as hard as he plays and Saturday was an indication of what he is capable of doing," said Hounds forward John Spoltore.

Hockey Clinic for Mites and Squirts in process: The Chicago Hounds Hockey team is in the process of putting together a Mite & Squirts clinic @ the Sears Centre on Sat Dec 16th from 9am to noon. The details will be more specific in regards to the on ice activities as the date nears. We are checking to see how much interest there is in the hockey community to put together a function of this nature. One hour on ice clinic with instruction from our head coach Greg Puhalski and assistant coach Steve Cromie. There will be stations set up on the ice that cover, stick handling; shooting, passing and all other facets of the game, the players of the Hounds will be handling the stations. The package will include access to the ice for the clinic and of course the tickets will be good for the game that night.

The Remake! The Hounds will finally get their home meeting against the Flint Generals. If you remember, and we're betting you do; the inaugural Hounds home game was cancelled do to poor ice conditions. The Sears Centre has agreed to pay for arraignments to bring Flint back to remake the game that never took place.

Say Hello To Mike Brolsma: A pleasant surprise this season has been the effort of forward Mike Broslma. With a goal and an assist Saturday night, Mike moves into a tie for the team lead in points with 11 and +/- with +5. Head Coach Greg Puhalski likes what he sees from Broslma thus far, "He moves his feet and drives to the net. He has been in the right play at the right time."
