Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - The Philadelphia Union Foundation and Fare & Square Market unveiled the results of the Foundation's $25,000 donation today.
The only non-for-profit grocery store in the nation located in Chester, Pa., Philabundance opened Fare & Square in 2013. The only grocery store in Chester, Fare & Square looks to support and help provide a healthier community for Chester's families and children. The grocery store also provides many job opportunities to Chester residents.
With the largest donation in the Foundation's history, Fare & Square opened nine new freezers that will provide customers with halal food and frozen seafood. The donation also contributed to upgrades in the deli area, including fresh paint, signage and a TV displaying weekly specials.
"At the Philadelphia Union Foundation it is our aim to have a positive and tangible effect on the Children in Chester," Philadelphia Union Foundation Fundraising Chair Jim Korman said. "Whether through our own programs, or collaborations with like-minded organizations, like Philabundance, we hope to provide resources and opportunities that can be a conduit for transformational change."
The Philadelphia Union Foundation works specifically in the local Chester community with four core pillars: reinforcing education and life skills, supporting recreation and play, keeping communities safe and promoting healthy lifestyles.
The donation to Fare & Square comes after a successful 2015, in which the Foundation received recognition from the Chester Upland School District Receiver, Dr. Francis Barnes, for its dedication to the area.
Moving forward, Philadelphia Union Foundation will look to continue its relationship with Philabundance and Fare & Square market though joint educational programming that focus on bringing nutrition into the community's daily repertoire.
Throughout the year, the Philadelphia Union uses Fare & Square to purchase items for food drives and staff lunches.
