Toronto FC News Release

Major League Soccer (MLS) announced Thursday the complete regular season schedule for the 2016 season; which marks the 21st season in league history.

Toronto FC will open the tenth season in club history on Sunday, March 6 against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. It will mark the tenth consecutive year the team will open the season on the road. The Reds will play their first eight games of the 2016 season on the road to accommodate the construction upgrades to BMO Field.

Toronto FC will host FC Dallas on Saturday, May 7 to open the club's home schedule as TFC returns to a newly renovated BMO Field. Phase II of BMO Field's $120 million expansion began last fall and will see significant changes for the 2016 season. Among the additions in the second phase is the installation of a canopy roof that will cover the east, west and south stands. In addition, brand new lighting and sound systems will be installed along with a rigging system for tifo displays, similar to those found in European stadiums.

During the 2016 season, Toronto FC will play 21 matches on Saturdays, eight on Sundays and five on Wednesdays. At home the club will play 11 matches on Saturdays, three on Wednesdays and three Sundays. There will also be a two-week break following the match on Saturday, May 28 against the New York Red Bulls to accommodate the group phase of the 2016 Copa América Centenario. The tournament is being held in the United States and marks the first time the Copa América will be hosted outside of South America.

11 of the Reds 17 home matches will come against clubs that made the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, including the Eastern Conference Champions, Columbus Crew SC on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, July 31. Toronto will travel to Portland to play the defending MLS Cup Champion Timbers on Sunday, May 1.

Toronto FC will face Canadian rivals, Montreal Impact on three occasions this season. Montreal will play host on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, October 16 and come to Toronto on Saturday, August 27. The Reds will host the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, May 14 in Toronto.
