Checkers Split Preseason Games

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers split their preseason games this weekend with the Columbia Inferno. The Checkers picked up a 4-3 win Friday night in Columbia, but were edged out Saturday 5-4 at Pineville Ice House.
The Checkers posted the win Friday night with goals from Luke Stauffacher, Lee Falardeau, Rick Kozak and Juris Stals. Stals scored the game-winner at 8:16 in the third period. The Inferno goals were scored by Dallas Flaman, Eric Nelson and Dave Bonk.
The teams took the ice less than 24 hours later with the Inferno on the right side of a one-point win. Nick Greenough scored the game-winner for the Inferno at the 18:15 mark in the third period.
The Checkers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after Falardeau found the back of the net for his second goal of the preseason (assists to Stauffacher and Jacobson). Columbia got on the board early in the second period and took the lead after goals from Derek Eastman and Mike Stathopoulos at the 5:18 and 5:40 mark, respectively. Charlotte regained the lead as the teams went in for the second intermission following goals from Blake Bellefeuille (from Mike Bayrack) and Kozak (from Jerramie Domish).
The Inferno scored the first-three goals of the final period en route to the 5-4 win. Eastman scored his second goal of the game at the 12:31 mark while Blake Robson picked up his first goal of the preseason at the 14:31 mark. Greenough's game winner was followed by a Checkers goal from Nathan Gillies at the 19:28 mark of the final period.
The Checkers will be back in action Friday as they travel to face the Gwinnett Gladiators in the 2005-06 season opener. The Checkers will play the first five games of the season on the road before the home opener Sunday, November 6th at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
