San Diego Gulls News Release
Mira Mesa, CALIF. - The Phoenix Roadrunners overcame a late two-goal deficit, but the San Diego Gulls had the final answer in the shootout and skated away with a 3-2 victory, before a standing room only crowd at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa.
The Gulls carried a 2-0 lead into the third period, but the Roadrunners came back to tie, forcing overtime and the eventual shootout. Nothing was settled after six rounds of the shootout, but Martin Mandeville beat Mathieu Chouinard in the seventh round to send San Diego home winners.
San Diego out-shot Phoenix 10-5 in the first period and drew first blood 11:35 into the frame on a short-handed tally by rookie Brad Wanchulak. After taking a pass from David Svagrovsky, Wanchulak skated across the blue line and beat Phoenix netminder Mike Mole top-shelf.
Sean Starke gave the Gulls a 2-0 cushion 16:56 into the second period, banking in a rebound off the end boards. Tomas Slovak's original shot from the left point sailed wide, but Starke was right there to pick up the carom and slide it past an out-of-position Chouinard. The ex-Gull Chouinard entered in relief midway through the second after Mole left with an injury.
Joe Dusbabek got the Roadrunners on the board just nine seconds into the third period. After a funny hop of the boards, Dusbabek jumped on the loose puck and beat Weiman.
Phoenix tied it with a power-play goal at 15:55 of the third, as Dave Cousineau found the back of the net. There was a wild scramble in front of Weiman, but Cousineau grabbed the puck and slid it home.
In the shootout period, Steve Hildenbrand, Frantisek Skladany and Mandeville beat Chouinard. Miguel LaFleche and Dusbabek beat Weiman.
San Diego and Phoenix meet again Saturday at 5 p.m. while the Bakersfield Condors come to town for the preseason finale Sunday, with game-time set for 3:30 p.m. Both games will also be played at the San Diego Ice Arena. The Gulls open the regular season Friday, Oct. 21 in Alaska and open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. Season ticket packages are currently on sale.
