San Diego Gulls News Release

Mira Mesa, CALIF. - It was a seesaw battle all game long, but the San Diego Gulls came out on top for the second straight night in a shootout, defeating the Phoenix Roadrunners 5-4, before another standing room only crowd at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa.

Jade Galbraith gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 12:45 into the first period. Grady Moore had the puck at the right point and slid it across the blue line to Galbraith, whose one-timer beat a screened Mathieu Chouinard.

The Roadrunners tied it at 18:50 of the first, thanks to a patient Shawn Snider. After grabbing the puck in front of the net, Snider held his ground and waited for San Diego netminder Tom Lawson to drop down. As soon as he did, Snider easily flipped it home.

Phoenix scored twice early in the second period to grab a 3-1 advantage. Paul Ballantyne lit the lamp first at 1:39, as his deflected shot floated over Lawson's shoulder and bounced into the net. Chris Mann then struck at 3:49, flipping in a shot from the top of the crease.

San Diego answered, however, with two straight goals and knotted the game, 3-3. Both tallies again came via the power play, as Steve Hildenbrand and Jesse Bennefield traded markers. Hildenbrand's came at 7:55, one-timing in a pass from Bennefield from the left wing circle. Bennefield tied it at 17:44, off Hildenbrand's setup feed.

Frantisek Skladany scored the Gulls' fourth power-play goal of the game 4:31 into the third period, whistling a wrist shot over Chouinard's out-stretched glove. Snider answered back with his second goal of the game at 9:49, which came on a Phoenix man advantage.

In the shootout period, Guillaume Fournier, Hildenbrand and Martin Mandeville scored for San Diego. The only Roadrunner to beat Lawson in the extra frame was B.J. Gaustad.

San Diego closes out the preseason Sunday against the Bakersfield Condors, with game-time set for 3:30 p.m. at the San Diego Ice Arena. The Gulls open the regular season Friday in Alaska and open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. Season ticket packages are currently on sale.
