Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Charlotte, North Carolina – Saturday, February 7 ) The Charlotte Checkers are doing something they didn't do earlier in the season...win at home. The Checkers picked up another home win Saturday night by shutting out the Roanoke Express 3-0 at Cricket Arena before nearly 8,000 fans. The largest crowd of the season saw Checkers goalie Scott Meyer make 29 saves and even chip in an assist to spark the victory. Mike Wirll, Richard Keyes and Lucas Lawson all had a goal and an assist, with Wirll extending his goal-scoring streak to an ECHL-high six games. Keyes' two points gave him three goals and nine assists for 12 points in his last six games.

"The guys played great tonight and we're having a lot of fun," quoted Meyer. "The attitude in the locker room is great and the guys really want to win."

The Checkers led 1-0 after the first period as Wirll lifted Dusty Jamieson's rebound over Express goalie Josh Wolfe at 8:45. Meanwhile Meyer had to be sharp in the first period with Roanoke getting several quality chances in front of the net, as the Express outshot the Checkers 16-9 through the first 20 minutes.

Charlotte increased its lead to 2-0 at 10:03 of the second period as the Checkers converted a three-on–one break as Lawson scored on a rebound from in close. Charlotte dominated the period outshooting the Express 15-6.

The Checkers put some icing on the cake when Keyes scored his third goal of the season at 9:16 of the final period to go up 3-0. In the final frame Meyer needed seven saves to gain his second shutout of the season, and he got them for the 3-0 final.

Charlotte's record went back to four games over .500 at 23-19-6 for 52 points and remained in fifth place in the Southern Division, just three points behind fourth place Florida. The Express dropped their second straight and saw their record fall to 22-21-5 for 49 points.
