Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA â The Louisiana IceGators and the Florence Pride faced-off for their first tilt this season today at the Cajundome. The IceGators secured their top spot in the Central Division with their 3-1 win. The Gators are now 33-12-2 with 68 points in the standings. Mississippi had the day off, so the Gators are now four points ahead of their arch-rival.
The first period was scoreless and each team had just one man-advantage opportunity. The Gators put 11 shots on Matt Underhill, but none got through. The Pride put just eight shots on Derek Gustafson, who made his third consectutive start in goal.
The Florence Pride opened the scoring in the second period at the Cajundome today. Just 1:25 into the period, Jeff Szwez put the Pride up by one goal.
Chris Taliercio evened the score with his first goal back in a Gator sweater. The even-strength goal came at the 15:44 mark when Ben Storey stormed the blue line and streaked down the side boards. His cross-ice pass hit Armands Berzins on the tape and Berzins shot at Matt Underhill. The Pride netminder popped a rebound back out and Taliercio whipped it back past him for the first Gator tally.
Semir Ben-Amor scored the go-ahead goal three minutes later when Jamie Johnson sprang Konstantin Kalmikov into the Pride zone. Kalmikov drew Underhill's attention and then shot the puck across to Ben-Amor who wristed it into the twine and put the Gators up 2-1.
The Gators held on to their one-goal lead until the end of the third period. The Pride pulled Underhill for the extra skater. The Gators won the face-off in their own end and the puck shot to Ed McGrane, positioned by the bench. McGrane corralled the puck and skated unhindered into the Wolves' end. He shot the puck in from the high slot for his 9th goal of the season.
The Pride put 30 shots on Derek Gustafson through three periods. The Gators netminder stopped 29 of them for his 19th win of the season. Down at the other end of the ice, Matt Underhill faced 28 Gator shots and stopped 26 of them. Each team only had two power plays in the game.
The Gators have a few days off before they travel to Beaumont to take on the Texas Wildcatters on Friday, February 13, at 7:05 pm. They will travel to Pensacola to take on the Ice Pilots at the "Hangar" on Valentine's Day at 7:05 pm.
