Checkers lose game one to Gladiators, 4-0
April 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL) - Charlotte Checkers News Release
Gwinnett, GA - The Charlotte Checkers couldn't find a way to beat Gwinnett goalie Craig Kowalski while allowing four goals against them resulting in a defeat by a score of 4-0.
Kowalski made a spectacular save to start the game getting his left pad down to thwart Bruce Graham's shot that nearly slid into an empty night. The only goal scored in the first period was by the Gladiators as Matt Anderson fired a shot that deflected off a Checkers stick in front of netminder Chris Holt and snuck between the pads and into the net at 17:59. This gave a 1-0 advantage after the first twenty minutes.
The Gladiators extended their lead in the second period with a breakaway goal by Tomas Pospisil that hit the left arm of Holt and rolled just past the goal line at 4:14. Gwinnett forward Brad Schell scored to make it 3-0 when he cut to the net, took a nice backhand pass from Jeff Campbell and flipped it over the blocker of Holt at 11:35. This left Charlotte three goals down going into the third stanza.
The final period would see Gwinnett register one more goal, this time on the power play. It was Mike Hamilton's power play goal at 11:35 that made it a 4-0 game. The Gladiators would take a 1-0 lead in the series with game two set for Thursday night.
