Checkers Defeated by Everblades, 6-3

Fort Myers, FL. - The Charlotte Checkers were in the midst of a five game winning streak when they were stopped on the road by the Florida Everblades by a score of 6-3.

The Everblades scored three goals during the first period of the contest. First, it was Florida forward Colin Nicholson slamming home a rebound off a point shot from Noah Babin during a Florida power play at 7:54 putting the Everblades up 1-0. Later, Everblades captain Kevin Baker blasted a one-timer past Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis during a two-man advantage at 15:12 giving Florida a 2-0 lead. It only took 22 seconds later during the ensuing one-man advantage for the Everblades to strike again as Ross Carlson banked in a rebound for a 3-0 lead at 15:34.

The Checkers began the second period by chipping away at the Everblades lead. The first goal by Charlotte was scored by forward Michel Leveille when he took the nice feed from linemate Jeff Miles during a two-on-one rush and angled the puck behind a sprawling Florida goalie David Leggio at 4:41. The Checkers had a two-man advantage and it was the newest Checker, blueliner Ethan Graham who fired a one-timer into the net at 6:55. This cut the Everblades lead to 3-2 after and that would remain the score after 40 minutes of action.

The final period allowed the Everblades to extend their lead. Florida forward Ryan Lang redirected a nice pass from winger Matt Auffrey over the blockerside of Jakaitis at 8:34 putting the up Blades 4-2. The Everblades struck for two power play goals as Checkers forward P.J. Corsi was assessed a major penalty. Mark Lee (10:46) and Steve McJannet (15:23) extended the Everblades lead to 6-2. The Checkers would get one back as Corsi made a nice move around Leggio at 18:05 cutting the lead to 6-3 but, it wouldn't be enough to mount a comeback and the Everblades skated away with 6-3 victory.
