Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs didn't start 2009 on the right foot as they fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 6-1 Friday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

The new year started the same way last year ended, with the Chiefs falling behind early. At the 2:47 mark the Cyclones struck first when Paul Lynch notched his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. At the 11:13 mark Barret Ehgoetz made it 2-0 with his 10th of the year. Ian Keserich saved 8 shots, while the Chiefs only managed four in the first.

Johnstown got its first goal of 2009 on a penalty shot. Wes Clark snuck behind the defense and got an ice length pass, but was taken down form behind. Officials awarded him a penalty shot, and he took advantage beating Klye Gajewski through the five hole to cut the lead to 2-1. Unfortunately that was as close as the Chiefs got. Just 1:20 later TJ McElroy scored his eighth of the season to make 3-1 at the end of two periods.

The Cyclones scored 3 times in the third to put the game away. Jimmy Kilpatrick started the scoring at the 2:48 mark with Jimmy Kilpatrick scoring from an impossible angle. Michael Cohen scored the game's final two goals to set the final at 6-1. Cohen also had an assist in the game. The Chiefs managed only four shots in the third and 20 in the game.

Keserich stopped 26 of 32 shots in the losing effort. The Chiefs were 0 for 3 on the power play.
