Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Wild (25-30-4-6, 60 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (34-30-1-2, 71 points) 7-0 in front of 4,675 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday. Checkers forward Zach Boychuk registered a hat trick and added two assists, leading his team to victory. Charlotte goalie John Muse (24-12-0) earned the shutout, making 22 saves for the win. Iowa goalie John Curry (7-9-2) made 28 saves, as Iowa fell to 11-20-3-1 at home this year. The Wild begins a five-game road trip on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 2 p.m.
The Checkers opened the scoring at 14:07 of the first period with a goal by Boychuk. The left winger picked up a cross-ice pass near the crease, scoring on a backhander to make it 1-0. Forwards Jared Staal and Brody Sutter each helped set up Boychuk's team-leading 30th goal of the season.
The Checkers added to the lead at 2:20 of the second period off a power-play goal by Captain Brett Sutter. The forward feathered in a wrist shot near the left-wing circle to make it 2-0. Boychuk and defender Ryan Murphy each picked up an assist on the play. Boychuk increased his club's lead to 3-0 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 7:23. The forward tapped the puck into the net, picking up his second goal of the game. Forward Justin Shugg and defenseman Michal Jordan each helped set up the goal.
In the third period, Sutter scored an early goal at 1:48 for a 4-0 lead. Boychuk and forward Chris Terry each assisted on the play. Charlotte center Victor Rask made it 5-0 at 3:55, with an assist from Terry. Boychuk earned his hat trick at 6:13, putting his team up 6-0. Shugg and Terry each added an assist on the goal. Checkers forward Philippe Cornet scored at 14:45 for a 7-0 final.
Iowa begins a five-game road trip on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 2 p.m. in Toronto. The team will also make stops in Utica, Grand Rapids, Chicago and Milwaukee prior to returning home on Friday, April 11 for Chicago at 7:05 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
