Lancaster Stormers News Release

LANCASTER, Pa.-Infielder Ozzie Chavez has been acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies, it was announced today by Lancaster Barnstormers manager Butch Hobson.

He will be reporting to Class AA Reading. Chavez had played for the R-Phils in 2009 and 2010 and had been living in Reading during his time with the Barnstormers.

The switch-hitting infielder joined the Barnstormers June 12 after he was released by the Chicago White Sox off their Class AAA Charlotte roster. He played mostly shortstop for the Barnstormers but more recently made appearances spelling Gilberto Mejia at second base and Aaron Herr at third. He was hitting .175 with a pair of homers and 12 RBI. Chavez knocked in the winning run in a critical, 7-6, 16-inning victory over the Somerset Patriots on June 25 with a single down the right field line.

He becomes the tenth Barnstormers player to sign with a Major League organization since the start of spring training.

"Ozzie is a great clubhouse guy who goes about his business," said Hobson. "He is known very well by the Phillies and especially the people in Reading. We're happy for him to go up there and finish the season."

The Barnstormers close out a three-game series against the Camden Riversharks tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Faulkner Chevrolet box office at 717-509-3633 or by visiting www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.

The Lancaster Barnstormers are currently in their seventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
