Ducks Sweep Aside Road Warriors

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 1, 2011) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Road Warriors 5-2 on Monday night to complete a three-game series sweep at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Road Warriors jumped on the scoreboard first thanks to Carlos Sosa's first inning two-run homer to right off Ducks' starter Mark Diapoules. The Ducks stormed back to take a 3-2 lead on Javier Colina's first inning solo blast to left and Kraig Binick's two-run double to right in the second inning against Road Warriors' starter Miguel Martinez.

Dan Lyons kept the offense going in the fourth when he laced a RBI double down the left field line to increase the lead to two. John Rodriguez' RBI single to center in the eighth rounded out the scoring.

Diapoules (5-1) picked up the win, tossing six innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out six. Martinez (4-8) took the loss, yielding four runs on nine hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. Valerio de los Santos picked up the save with scoreless ninth.

Binick and Erick Monzon each led the way with three hits, with Binick driving in two runs and Monzon scoring twice.

Following a day off on Tuesday, the Ducks hit the road for a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots beginning Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:05 PM from TD Bank Ballpark. Duck Tales: Javier Colina's solo homer in the first inning was his 15th of the season and the Ducks' 104th longball this season. Colina has now hit first inning home runs in back-to-back games and nine of his 15 homers have come at Bethpage BallparkErick Monzon picked up another stolen base in the game, his fourth in four attempts this season. Monzon swiped 17 bases in 20 attempts with the Ducks in 2010Monzon and Kraig Binick each had three hits in the game. It was Binick's sixth three hit game and second consecutive contest with three hits. Ray Navarrete leads the Ducks with eight three-hit games this seasonTwo Ducks returned to action tonight after lengthy absences. Kennard Jones appeared in his first game since July 21 and collected two hits and a walk. Valerio de los Santos pitched in his first game since returning from a stint in the Mexican League and earned his first save of the seasonWith the victory, the Ducks improved to 14-1 against the Road Warriors in 2011, and they have a 115-28 record against them all-time. The Ducks have won 11 consecutive games against the Road Warriors this season as well as 23 of the last 24 and 41 of the last 44 meetings overall. This is the fourth time Long Island has swept the Road Warriors this season and the Ducks' eighth series sweep overall. Ducks' pitching also allowed just one walk in the series while striking out 34 batters.
