Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
York, PA - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs left 12 men on base and scored only one run while pounding out 11 singles as they lost the rubber match of a three- game series on Monday night to the York Revolution 7-1 in front of 2,458 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
The Revolution scored the game's first seven runs and it began in the second on an RBI single by right fielder Carlos Guzman for a 1-0 lead.
York took control of the game in the third inning as two bunt singles, an infield single, and a broken-bat flair into left provided four of the five hits as York jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Second baseman Ramon Castro and first baseman Chris Nowak each had RBI singles, while designated hitter Jose Herrera contributed with a sac-fly for the Revolution.
York extended their lead in the fifth as Herrera (5) blasted a two-run homer to make the score 6-0, before a solo-homer by Castro (9) in the seventh gave the Revolution their final run of the game. For Castro, it was his 100th career professional homerun.
The Blue Crabs lone run came in the eighth inning as a bases loaded RBI single by centerfielder Jeremy Owens broke up the shutout. The Blue Crabs could get no more in the frame as they left men on base in every inning except the seventh and ninth innings.
York was led by Castro who went 3-5 with a homer, two singles and two runs. Nowak and centerfielder Scott Grimes each had two hits as well with Nowak driving in a run. Southern Maryland got three hits for first baseman Joe Jiannetti, while leftfielder Richard Giannotti and designated hitter Brian Barton had two hits apiece to chip in.
Revolution starter Corey Thurman went five shutout innings while allowing six hits and striking out five to pick up his ninth win of the season. Blue Crabs starter Michael Schlact (5-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Southern Maryland will take tomorrow off before opening a three-game series and home stand on Tuesday with Camden. First-pitch is at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (6-5, 4.28 ERA) to the hill against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
