Charlotte Takes Series Opener 7-1

DURHAM, NC - On a night when the organization retired the jersey of its longtime manager Bill Evers, the Durham Bulls dropped the series opener with the rival Charlotte Knights 7-1. Charlie Shirek mastered a Bulls offense that never really threatened in the game, as the Knights won their fifth straight against Durham.
Hector Gimenez led the Knights attack, putting the team ahead early in the contest. Gimenez doubled and scored in his first two at bats and then tripled in his third. He finished the night going 3-for-4 with two doubles, the triple, a walk and three runs scored. Shirek (4-3, 3.76) earned his second victory of the season against the Bulls, tossing seven innings allowing an earned run on five hits, while walking two and striking out four.
Shane Dyer (0-1, 7.20), making his Triple-A debut, was shaky in his first start for the Bulls. The righty allowed four earned runs in five innings of work. Lefty Alex Torres relieved Dyer in the sixth and pitched well for two innings, before running into trouble in the eighth. Torres was charged with three runs, but struck out six.
Despite the loss, third baseman Matt Mangini extended his home hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-of-4 performance. He was the only Bull to have a multi-hit game.
In a ceremony before the game, Bill Evers- the winningest manager in Durham history- was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame. Evers became the first Triple-A era Bull to be inducted into the league's Hall. Fans watched as PA announcer Tony Riggsbee accompanied by league president Randy Mobley, Bulls GM Mike Birling and Vice President George Habel presented Evers with the trophy and revealed that the number 20, the jersey that the skipper wore, would be officially retired.
The Bulls continue their four game series against the Knights tomorrow at 5:05pm. RHP Matt Zaleski (1-1, 7.47) is set to take the hill for Charlotte while RHP Matt Torra (2-5, 6.25) toes the rubber for the Bulls. Following the game, kids run the bases thanks of Pepsi.
