Knights Knock Around Bulls in 7-1 Win on Saturday
May 19, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(Durham, NC) - Charlie Shirek allowed just one run over seven innings, Hector Gimenez went 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Durham Bulls 7-1 in the opening game of their four-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC on Saturday. The win was the Knights fifth straight against the Bulls this season.
In their last series, the Knights wrapped up a four-game sweep of the Bulls with a 5-2 win at Knights Stadium on April 19. After losing two of three to the Bulls in their first series of 2012, the Knights are now 6-2 against the Bulls this season.
The win for the Knights helped push the club to just two games out of first place in the International League's South Division. Gwinnett, the South Division leader, lost in Rochester to the Red Wings by a score of 6-4.
Shirek (4-3, 3.76) gave up just five hits and walked just two batters en-route to his second win of the season against the Bulls. Shirek, who has already won an International Pitcher of the Week award this season, is now 4-0 in six night starts this season (0-3 in three day games).
Offensively, Gimenez led the way with three of Charlotte's 12 hits, including two doubles. Ozzie Martinez and Jim Gallagher each had two RBIs in the game and Greg Golson, the International League hit leader, added a single and two stolen bases.
RHP Brian Omogrosso tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Shirek.
Charlotte (23-20) will look to RHP Matt Zaleski in game two on Sunday, while Durham will send RHP Matt Torra to the mound. First pitch from Durham Bulls Athletic Park is set for 5:05 p.m.
