Yankees Stun Clippers with Three Run Ninth in 8-6 Win

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Columbus, OH - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (22-19) used a three run ninth inning to pick up an 8-6 come from behind win, the team's second when trailing after eight innings, stunning 12,078, the fourth largest crowd in Huntington Park history. The win was the Yankees 14th come from behind victory and the teams second on the season when trailing after eighth innings.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored all three off Clippers closer Chris Ray (LP, 0-3) on three hits and a crucial error on what should have been a double play ground ball. Brandon Laird stepped up to the plate in the ninth with runners on the corners and none out following a lead off single by Jack Cust and a Ronnier Mustelier base hit that followed. Eduardo Nunez pinch ran for Cust following his base hit, and easily moved from first to third on the Mustelier single. With the Clippers looking to prevent the big inning Columbus played for a double play. Laird's grounder to shortstop, which looked to be a tailor made double play, still would have allowed the tying run to come home but when Jason Donald over threw Cord Phelps at second, everyone was safe and the big inning came into play. Francisco Cervelli gave the Yankees an 8-6 lead with a two RBI single into center over a drawn in infield.

The Yankees played catch up virtually the entire night as Columbus picked up the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning on Matt LaPorta's two out solo homer off Yankees starter Adam Warren. LaPorta's 13th homer of the season was an opposite field shot to right and the Clippers had the early 1-0 lead. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning off Clippers starter Eric Berger. Ronnier Mustelier led off the inning with a double moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a Berger wild pitch.

Columbus grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the second inning with two runs off Warren, who allowed five earned on the night in his 6.0 innings of work. The right hander walked one and struck out a season high seven while surrendering eight hits. Former Hazelton Area High School stand out Russ Canzler picked up the first of his two hits with an RBI single and would later score on a ground out as the Clippers regained the lead at 3-1 through two innings.

After the Yankees picked up a solo homer from Cust in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, the Clippers were back at it with single runs in the fourth and the fifth. Former Yankee outfielder Chad Huffman hit his fourth homer of the season into the seats in left in the fourth and Lonnie Chisenhall added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

The Yankees picked up the next three runs plating two in the sixth inning off Columbus reliever Frank Hermann on an RBI double by Laird and a sacrifice fly from Colin Curtis. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the game for the second time with a single run in the eighth inning on Cole Garner's RBI single off Cody Allen scoring Cervelli who singled and went first to third on a sac bunt from Ramiro Pena coupled with a fielding error by LaPorta at first.

With the score tied at 5-5 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Clippers look poised for a win heading to the ninth as they picked up the go ahead run off Yankees reliever Chas Whitley (WP, 5-2) on a triple from Canzler and a wild pitch that gave Columbus what turned out to be a short lived lead at 6-5 heading to the ninth.

Manny Delcarmen (SV, 2) retired the Clippers one, two, three in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Columbus continues a four game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 PM first pitch. The Yankees will send right hander Dellin Betances (2-3, 5.40 ERA) to the mound against Clippers lefty David Huff (1-1, 3.52).
