Rochester Holds on for a 6-4 Win over Gwinnett

ROCHESTER, NY -The Rochester Red Wings banged out a season-high 14 hits and picked up a 6-4 win over the Gwinnett Braves in game one of the four-game series Saturday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. The loss, the G-Braves' fourth in a row, combined with a 7-1 Charlotte win over Durham, has now cut the Gwinnett lead to two games in the International League South Division.

The Red Wings got on the board in the very first inning off of G-Braves starter Eric Junge. Pedro Florimon hit a ball to right that was lost in the sun by Felix Pie. Florimon ended up with a triple on the play and would score on a single to center by former Gwinnett Brave Wilkin Ramirez.

Gwinnett tied the game at one in the top of the second when Ernesto Mejia tripled to right-center and later scored on a ground out by Pie.

However, in the bottom of the second, Rochester would take the lead for good. Sean Burroughs led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a walk by Matt Carson. With two outs, Rene Rivera singled to right to score Burroughs to make it 2-1 Red Wings, and an error by G-Braves second baseman Greg Paiml allowed Carson to score to put the Red Wings up 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, a two-run homer by Rochester's Tsuyoshi Nishioka off of Junge increased the lead to 5-1.

The Red Wings added their final run in the bottom of the fifth as Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk off of G-Braves reliever Dusty Hughes to make it a 6-1 game. The run was charged to Junge who had allowed the first two men to reach base in the inning.

Gwinnett made a charge in the top of the ninth. Rochester starter Cole DeVries took the mound in the inning trying for the complete game win, but quickly got into trouble. Jose Yepez and Paiml led off with back-to-back singles. They both scored as Jose Constanza tripled to left-center, making it 6-3. The Red Wings lifted DeVries and brought in Anthony Slama from the bullpen. Luis Durango grounded out to second, scoring Constanza from third and cutting the Rochester lead to 6-4. But Slama struck out Stefan Gartrell for the second out and got Mejia to foul out to end the game.

Junge (L, 3-4) went six innings for the loss. He allowed 12 hits and six runs, five of which were earned. He walked two and struck out three. Hughes worked one inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Adam Russell pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth with one hit and one strikeout.

DeVries (W, 1-4) went eight innings for his first win of the season. He gave up six hits, four earned runs, walked none and struck out six. Slama (S, 8) picked up the save in one inning of work with one strikeout.

The G-Braves could only muster six hits on the night, and half of those came in the top of the ninth. Paiml was 2-for-3. The other four hits came from Yepez, Constanza, Pie and Mejia.

For Rochester, Chris Parmelee was 3-for-5. Ramirez, Carson, Valencia and Rivera each had two hits.

The Gwinnett Braves (25-18) and Rochester Red Wings (18-24) continue the four-game series in Rochester Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. Right-hander Todd Redmond (3-3, 2.84 ERA) will pitch for the G-Braves.
