May 19, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

A big first inning and Brandon Waring's first Triple-A home run powered Norfolk to an 8-4 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox in front of a season-high crowd of 9,439 Saturday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame, sending eight men to the plate as they scored four runs against Justin Germano (4-3). Joe Mahoney put Norfolk on the board with an RBI double, and he came around to score on a single by Chris Robinson. Ronny Paulino followed with a two-run double, extending the Tides' advantage to 4-0.

Waring added to Norfolk's lead in the third, as he drilled the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a two-run homer. Waring, who was promoted from Double-A Bowie on Friday, also doubled off the left-center field wall in the fifth frame.

After Pawtucket pulled within 6-4, Jamie Hoffmann plated two runs with a two-out single in the eighth. Hoffmann was one of five Tides batters to collect multiple hits in the game.

Kevin Youkilis finished 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts in a rehab game for the Pawsox. Youkilis, who is rehabbing a lower back strain, is now hitting .333 (3-for-9) through three games with Pawtucket.

Tides' starter Steve Johnson allowed a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings, but he had to leave the contest due to a strained groin. He will be reevaluated Sunday.

Pat Neshek (2-0) earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Tides and Pawsox will continue their four-game set on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch from Harbor Park scheduled for 1:15. Brad Bergesen (1-2, 5.13) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Brandon Duckworth (5-0, 3.95).

Fans can bring their dogs to Sunday's contest, and the first 4,000 to enter Harbor Park will receive a color photo of Joe Mahoney, courtesy of The Tide and ESPN Radio 94.1. Mets legend and former Tide Ed Kranepool will also be on hand to sign autographs on the concourse.

Infielder Miguel Tejada, recently signed by Baltimore as a free agent, is expected to join the Tides' roster in time for Sunday's game.
