Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels stymied the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-2 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday evening to notch their ninth series win of the season. Ryan Eades earned his fourth victory after seven stout frames on the mound. Mitch Garver tallied two doubles, two RBIs and a run while teammates Jason Kanlzer and Chad Christensen each added a run-batted-in. The River Bandits pitching staff allowed eight walks in the losing affair.
Great defense defined the opening of the ballgame as the first two innings ended on the base paths for the River Bandits. Mitch Garver caught James Ramsay stealing to the end the first and Tyler White was thrown out at second base trying to extend a single into a double to end the second. Garver threw out three Bandits on the base paths during the contest.
The Kernels drew first blood 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Jason Kanzler singled in Mitch Garver. Garver led off the inning with his team-high 15th double of the year and reached base for the 21st consecutive game.
Adrian Houser (4-2) left the mound for Quad Cities after 2 1/3 innings of action. The starter surrendered three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking two in his ninth start of the year.
Tyler Brunnemann entered out of relief midway through the bottom of the third. The right-hander gave up one run on one hit through 2 2/3 innings while striking out one and walking two.
Cedar Rapids added three runs in the bottom of the third after the bases were walked loaded on one out. Chad Christensen brought in Jon Murphy on a sacrifice fly to right field and Garver hammered his second double of the night to plate Engelb Vielma and Ryan Walker to make the score 4-0.
The Bandits got on the board in the top of the fourth when White tripled in Ronnie Mitchell. Brian Holberton drove in White on a single to right field in the next at bat to cut the Kernels lead in half, 4-2.
Kevin Comer began the sixth inning on the mound for the Bandits. Comer would finish after loading the bases in the eighth with no outs. The reliever allowed one run on one hit while striking out one and walking three during his two innings of work.
Ryan Eades (4-7) exited after seven strong innings of work on the bump. The Kernels' starter allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking one in the winning outing.
Right-hander Alex Muren opened the eighth frame of work for Cedar Rapids. Muren tossed two hitless, scoreless frames while walking one and sending down three Bandits on strikes during his first save of the season.
Frederick Turbicio came on to pitch out of an eighth inning jam for the Bandits. Tiburcio pitched one lone frame where he walked one and struck out two hitters.
The Kernels received an insurance run in the bottom of the eight when Joel Licon walked to bring across Christensen to make the final mark 5-2.
