Peterson, TinCaps slam Lugnuts, 7-2

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Dustin Peterson belted a grand slam, helping the Fort Wayne TinCaps (29-37) avoid being swept by the Lansing Lugnuts (31-35) with a 7-2 win on Thursday night at Parkview Field.

Lansing outhit Fort Wayne 9-8, but stranded 11 base runners in the series finale of the three-game set.

The TinCaps broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning, capped off by the Peterson slam to left-center against Lansing starter Matt Dermody (Loss, 3-3). The 19-year-old 'Caps third baseman increased his league-leading RBI total to 52.

Fort Wayne starting pitcher Ronald Herrera (Win, 5-4) pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits and a walk.

Justin Livengood (Save, 1) pitched the remaining four, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Designated hitter L.B. Dantzler gave the Lugnuts a lead in the first inning with an RBI single, but a solo home run by Fort Wayne left fielder Luis Tejada squared the game at 1-1 in the third.

First baseman Matt Dean knocked an RBI double in the ninth to cap his 3-fo-5, raising his batting average to .320.

Lansing reliever Adaric Kelly pitched two scoreless innings for the Lugnuts with one hit and one strikeout. Roberto Espinosa worked around a walk in the eighth with a pair of strikeouts to record a scoreless frame.

The Lugnuts head to Midland, Mich. on Friday to kick off the final series of the season's first half, facing the Great Lakes Loons. Lefty Shane Dawson (2-2, 3.62) will start on the mound for Lansing, countered by right-hander Zachary Bird (3-8, 4.50) for Great Lakes.
