Kane County Cougars News Release

PEORIA, Ill. - With another victory Thursday evening, the Cougars are two wins away from tying the franchise record for wins in the first half of the season. A 4-1 victory over the Peoria Chiefs (34-32) improved the Cougars to 45-22. The record for 47 wins in the first half was set by the 2001 Cougars that included Miguel Cabrera and Adrian Gonzalez who went on to win the Midwest League Championship.

The Cougars jumped out to a lead in the second inning when Cael Brockmeyer kept the frame alive with a two-out double and scored on Shawon Dunston Jr.'s single.

The 1-0 lead held until the fifth inning when Dunston led off with a base hit and Carlos Penalver belted a run-scoring triple for a 2-0 lead. Penalver scored two batters later on Jake Hannemann's groundout for a 3-0 Cougars' advantage.

Juan Paniagua didn't need much of a cushion as he worked six straight scoreless frames his second consecutive outing and struck out six Chiefs.

More two-out production came in the seventh inning when Daniel Lockhart plated Trey Martin with a single for a 4-0 Cougars' lead.

Peoria's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh on Steve Bean's solo blast to right field. Zak Hermans didn't allow another base runner after the home run.

Paniagua (3-3) earned the win as Jimmy Reed (3-2) suffered the loss despite a quality outing of six innings and three runs while striking out seven. James Pugliese struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.

The Cougars will visit Beloit next for their final series of the first half. Paul Blackburn (5-2, 2.72) will throw for the Cougars against the Snappers' Dylan Covey (3-5, 4.56). First pitch from Beloit, Wisconsin is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
